A 58-year-old man has been fined RM1,500, or one month’s jail in default, after pleading guilty to making a false police report involving an alleged theft of RM275,000.
Kapit District Police Chief DSP Rohana Nanu said the man was charged under Section 182 of the Penal Code for providing false information to a public servant.
She said the accused admitted to falsely claiming that RM150,000 in cash and a gold chain worth RM125,000 had been stolen from his rented room earlier this month.
“The suspect pleaded guilty and was sentenced to a fine of RM1,500 or one month’s imprisonment if he fails to pay the fine,” she said in a statement.
Police investigations later found that the cash and jewellery mentioned in the report did not exist, with the complainant eventually admitting that he had fabricated the theft claim during questioning.
The case began after the man lodged a report on July 2, claiming that he discovered the cash, allegedly intended for workers’ salaries at a logging camp, and a gold chain missing after returning to his rented room along Jalan Temenggong Jugah.
He had claimed that the money was kept under a mattress while the jewellery was stored inside a black suitcase, with the total losses estimated at RM275,000.
Further investigations revealed that the man had been removed from the rented premises after failing to pay rent for three months, resulting in the landlord and a worker moving his belongings out while he was away.
Police found no signs of forced entry at the room, although crime scene personnel recovered a fingerprint from a bedroom window during investigations.
The investigation later confirmed that the alleged theft was fabricated, leading to the man being charged for making a false report.
