Four large crocodiles were successfully captured by a licensed crocodile catching team during an operation at Sungai Kemena last night, including one reptile estimated to be nearly 5.2 metres long.
Bintulu MP Steven Kong Kai Seng’s special duties officer said he immediately went to Kampung Baru jetty after receiving information about the successful operation to view the captured crocodiles.
He said the operation, carried out by the licensed crocodile catchers, began at around 5pm before the team returned to the jetty at about 11pm with the four reptiles.
“The team managed to capture four crocodiles measuring more than three metres in length at Sungai Kemena, with the largest estimated to be almost 5.2 metres.
“Seeing the size of the reptiles first-hand highlighted the risks and major challenges faced by the crocodile catching team in ensuring the safety of residents and fishermen along Sungai Kemena,” he said.
He expressed his appreciation to the team for their dedication in carrying out the high-risk operation to help protect the local community from potential crocodile threats.
Steven stressed that safety must remain the priority during every operation, while all relevant regulations and procedures must be strictly followed.
Although the operation had reduced the threat in the area, he reminded residents living near the river to remain vigilant as the risk of crocodile encounters still remains.
He advised the public to avoid approaching riverbanks or carrying out activities in the water without taking proper safety precautions.
Steven also thanked the crocodile catching team for their continuous efforts in safeguarding the safety of residents in Bintulu.
