Kylian Mbappe became the FIFA World Cup’s all-time leading goalscorer after netting twice in France’s 6-4 defeat to England in the third-place playoff on Sunday morning.
The Real Madrid forward’s brace took his overall World Cup tally to 22 goals, allowing him to surpass Lionel Messi, who currently sits on 21 goals in the race for the all-time scoring record.
However, Mbappe’s position at the top could still change, with Messi given the opportunity to reclaim the record when he captains Argentina against Spain in the World Cup final early Monday morning (3am Malaysian time).
Mbappe also etched his name into the history books by becoming the first player since Germany legend Gerd Müller in 1970 to score 10 or more goals in a single World Cup tournament.
Despite reaching another personal milestone, Mbappe was unable to inspire France to finish the tournament on a high, with Les Bleus ending their campaign in fourth place following the defeat to England.
His latest achievement nevertheless cements his reputation as one of the tournament’s greatest goalscorers, even as the battle for the all-time World Cup scoring record remains alive heading into the final.
