A local man’s decision to rent out his motorcycle to a Rohingya man for RM150 a month backfired after the vehicle was seized by the Road Transport Department (JPJ) recently.
The Rohingya man, believed to be in his 30s and working as a construction labourer, was detained during a JPJ enforcement operation at Jalan Datuk Kumbar here at about 9am.
JPJ Kedah director Stien Van Lutam said the man attempted to flee after noticing the presence of enforcement officers but was successfully stopped.
He said inspections found that the man failed to produce a valid Competent Driving Licence (CDL) during the operation.
“Further investigations found that the Yamaha 135LC motorcycle was believed to have been rented for RM150 per month and had been used for daily activities for about a year.
“The motorcycle owner was identified as a 61-year-old local man,” he said in a statement.
Stien said checks showed that the motorcycle’s road tax and insurance coverage were still valid.
However, the vehicle was seized for further action under the Road Transport Act 1987.
He added that JPJ would not compromise against vehicle owners who allow or rent out their vehicles to undocumented migrants without ensuring they possess a valid driving licence.
