Date:

The trial of a couple accused of murdering University of Cyberjaya student Maniishapriet Kaur Akhara in June has been transferred to the Shah Alam High Court.

The Sepang magistrates’ court officially ordered the transfer today, as murder cases fall under the jurisdiction of the High Court, according to Berita Harian.

Nineteen-year-old M. Sri Darvien is charged with killing Maniishapriet at a condominium unit in Cyberjaya between 9:11 pm and 11:31 pm on June 23. His charge under Section 302 of the Penal Code carries the death penalty, or 30 to 40 years in prison, along with a minimum of 12 strokes of the cane if convicted.

Sri Darvien’s girlfriend, 19-year-old D. Thineswary, faces charges of abetting the murder under Section 109 of the Penal Code read with Section 302, which carries the same penalties.

Maniishapriet, 20, was found dead in her condominium unit by a friend around 10 am on June 24. At the time, she was staying in the unit with five other students, but her housemates had returned to their hometowns for the holidays on June 21.
