An elderly man tragically died after being trampled by a wild elephant in Gadchiroli district, eastern Maharashtra, on Wednesday.
According to a forest official, the victim, 62-year-old Waman Gedam, was a resident of Churachura-Malguzari village. The incident occurred around 4:30 p.m. in the Porla forest area of Gadchiroli.
Waman was returning home with his brother, Mahadev Gedam, and another villager after taking their cattle to graze when a herd of elephants suddenly appeared from the forest and charged toward them.
Mahadev and the other villager managed to escape to safety, but Waman was unable to flee in time. A wild elephant reportedly lifted him with its trunk, threw him to the ground, and trampled him, resulting in his death at the scene.
Authorities have urged villagers to exercise caution in areas near the forest, especially during times when elephants are known to roam.
