A 44-year-old Filipina has been sentenced to 28 months in prison after pleading guilty to possessing a fake Malaysian identity card (MyKad).
Magistrate Marilyn Kelvin handed down the sentence on Tuesday after the accused, Rowena Lienado, admitted to the offence.
According to the charge, Rowena was found in possession of the fake MyKad at 6.20pm on July 30 at the Inanam Police Station in Sabah.
The forged identity card was issued under the name Norain Abd Rahman and carried the serial number 901122-12-6620.
She was charged under Regulation 25(1)(e) of the National Registration Regulations 1990 (Amendment 2007), which provides a maximum penalty of three years’ imprisonment, a fine of up to RM20,000, or both upon conviction.
The court ordered Rowena to begin serving her sentence from the date of her arrest. She will also be referred to the Immigration Department after completing her prison term.
The court heard that Rowena was arrested during Ops Bersepadu.
A fingerprint check conducted by authorities found that her details did not exist in the National Registration Department (NRD) database.
Further investigations later confirmed that the MyKad was counterfeit.
The prosecution was conducted by NRD prosecuting officer Mohamad Faisal Tahir, while Rowena was unrepresented during the court proceedings.
