PAS has opened its doors to members of Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) Terengganu who wish to join the Islamist party following the recent leadership turmoil within Bersatu’s state chapter.
PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang said the party has always maintained an open stance towards individuals who are interested in joining and supporting its political struggle.
“We welcome those who want to join PAS,” he said when met by reporters after delivering a religious lecture here on Friday.
Abdul Hadi was responding to questions regarding the resignation of several senior Bersatu Terengganu leaders, which has sparked speculation over the party’s future direction in the state.
Earlier, Bersatu Terengganu faced a major leadership shake-up after three key figures announced their resignations, affecting the party’s leadership structure at state level.
The situation began when Bersatu Terengganu chairman Datuk Razali Idris stepped down from his position, which he had held for about a decade. Razali, who is also a state executive councillor, confirmed that he had submitted his resignation letter to Bersatu president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin on July 16.
However, Razali, one of the party’s founding members since its establishment in 2016, declined to reveal the reasons behind his decision and said he would remain a Bersatu member.
Besides Razali, two other senior Bersatu leaders also resigned from their respective state positions. Telemong assemblyman Mohd Zawawi Ismail relinquished his role as state information chief, while Hulu Besut assemblyman Mohd Husaimi Hussin stepped down as state treasurer.
Meanwhile, Bersatu Terengganu deputy chairman Khazan Che Mat, who is also the state assembly deputy speaker, had previously hinted that he may make a similar decision in the near future.
