Selangor Heatwave Raises Temperatures To 34°C, But No Drought Risk Yet

Date:

The impact of the Super El-Nino phenomenon has caused temperatures in Selangor to rise to 34 degrees Celsius, but the situation has yet to develop into a drought or water supply crisis in the state.

Selangor Infrastructure and Agriculture Committee chairman Datuk Izham Hashim said the hot weather conditions are expected to continue until March next year, based on forecasts by the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia).

He said that despite the unusually warm weather recently, water levels at the state’s main dams remain stable and are not showing signs of serious pressure.

“The current hot weather in Selangor has not reached drought levels. I advise residents to reduce outdoor activities and increase their water intake to prevent heat-related illnesses such as heatstroke,” he said when met at the Selangor State Legislative Assembly lobby.

Izham also urged the public to remain patient and take necessary precautions while facing the current weather conditions.

On the possibility of carrying out cloud seeding operations, he said the state government has yet to consider the measure as the situation has not entered a drought phase.

However, he acknowledged that rainfall levels recorded during the first six months of this year were lower compared with the same period last year.

“Last year, rainfall from January to June reached 1,000 millimetres (mm). This year, the amount has not reached that level,” he said.

He added that the state expects rainfall to increase towards the end of the year, although weather patterns remain difficult to predict.

Izham stressed that the current water storage levels at major dams are still under control and have not affected the state’s water supply situation.

The hot weather has raised concerns among residents in several parts of Selangor, with some areas experiencing intense heat and low wind conditions in recent days.
