Three local men were arrested after allegedly refusing to stop for police and leading officers on a chase in Sungai Merah, Sibu, on Friday.
Sibu district police chief ACP Abang Zainal Abidin Abang Ahmad said the incident took place at about 1.30am when a Mobile Patrol Vehicle (MPV) team carrying out crime prevention patrols spotted a suspicious Toyota Vios at the Paradom roundabout.
He said police personnel attempted to conduct an inspection and instructed the driver to stop, but the vehicle allegedly ignored the order and sped away.
“Assistance was immediately requested from other police teams before the vehicle was intercepted along Jalan Lilin in Sungai Merah following a pursuit,” he said in a statement.
Abang Zainal said the three men were detained for further investigation, while the vehicle was also seized along with several items believed to be linked to housebreaking activities.
Among the items recovered were a bolt cutter and a metal pry tool, which are commonly associated with property crimes.
He said the suspects failed to provide a reasonable explanation for possessing the equipment, and police are investigating whether they were involved in any planned criminal activities.
The case is being investigated under Section 186 of the Penal Code for obstructing a public servant in carrying out official duties, Section 37 of the Minor Offences Act 1955, and Section 6(1) of the Corrosive and Explosive Substances and Offensive Weapons Act 1958.
The suspects, aged between 28 and 40, have been remanded for four days until August 11 to assist investigations.
Police are also conducting further checks to determine whether the suspects are connected to other property crime cases reported in the district.
