Taxi Operators Still Free To Choose Other Models Outside Madani Taxi Programme

Date:

Taxi operators who already own existing vehicles or have been unable to obtain hire-purchase financing under the National Madani Taxi Renewal Programme are still permitted to licence or replace their taxis with other vehicle models besides the Proton S70 offered under the initiative.

The Land Public Transport Agency (APAD) said participation in the Madani Taxi programme is voluntary, and existing taxis that are not replaced through the programme can continue operating until they reach the maximum permitted vehicle age.

APAD encouraged taxi drivers to consider joining the programme to benefit from the incentives provided, but clarified that operators who do not qualify or choose not to participate will not be restricted from replacing their vehicles with other approved models.

“Applicants who already have an existing vehicle or are unsuccessful in obtaining hire-purchase financing approval under the Madani Taxi programme are still allowed to licence or replace their vehicle with a model other than the Proton S70 Madani Taxi,” the agency said in a statement.

The clarification follows a policy decision issued by the Transport Ministry on April 23 concerning new taxi applications and vehicle replacements under the programme.

Under the policy, applications for new taxis or replacements through the Madani Taxi programme remain optional and are limited to the Proton S70 taxi package introduced under the initiative.

The Madani Taxi programme was launched by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on July 3 as part of efforts to improve the country’s taxi services, in line with measures announced under Budget 2026.

APAD added that existing taxi vehicles not replaced under the programme will continue to be allowed to operate until the end of their approved lifespan.

Members of the public seeking further information may contact APAD for assistance regarding the programme and taxi replacement procedures.
