A dramatic CCTV recording from an operating theatre in Japan has captured the extraordinary actions of medical staff who used their own bodies to protect a patient as a powerful 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck Kumamoto Prefecture last month.
The footage, released by Japanese broadcaster NHK, shows a surgical team performing an open abdominal operation when the strong earthquake hit on July 28, causing violent shaking throughout the hospital.
As medical equipment swayed and toppled around the operating room, the surgeons immediately abandoned any attempt to protect themselves. Instead, they leaned over the patient, shielding the body with their own while holding the operating table steady to prevent further injury.
During the chaos, one nurse was struck on the head by falling equipment and collapsed. Despite the impact, she quickly got back up and continued assisting with the operation.
The rest of the medical team also responded with remarkable composure. Two nurses rushed to open the operating theatre doors to ensure emergency exit routes remained accessible, while the anaesthesiologist hurried to the patient’s head to secure the breathing tube, preventing it from becoming dislodged during the intense shaking.
After confirming it was safe to continue, the team calmly resumed the operation despite ongoing aftershocks and successfully completed the life-saving surgery.
The powerful footage has since gone viral, with many praising the medical staff for putting the patient’s life ahead of their own safety.
Social media users described the scene as “the most beautiful act of courage,” applauding the team’s professionalism, dedication and selflessness during one of the most terrifying moments imaginable.
