Former Perlis Menteri Besar Mohd Shukri Ramli has rejected allegations that he was responsible for weakening the party’s grassroots support or causing problems within the party following changes in the state leadership.
Mohd Shukri, who is also Sanglang assemblyman, said he had never encouraged party members to boycott the organisation, abandon its struggle or undermine the party machinery as alleged by certain quarters.
He said that after stepping down as Menteri Besar and losing his position in the party, he only received visits from friends and members who came to share their disappointment over the developments that had taken place.
According to him, those who had obtained the positions they wanted should not blame him when they later faced challenges such as a lack of manpower, weak party machinery or reduced support from members at the grassroots level.
“I am accused of influencing members and being the reason behind the current situation. Such accusations are unfair. Do not make me a scapegoat,” he said in a statement.
Mohd Shukri said if there was indeed a decline in grassroots support, party leaders should conduct self-reflection and identify the actual reasons behind the situation instead of placing blame on a particular individual.
He also denied claims that he was behind efforts to divide the party, urging leaders to evaluate whether their own actions, decisions or approach had disappointed party members and the public.
“If there are weaknesses within the party, do not immediately look for someone to blame. Reflect and ask whether the actions, methods or decisions made have caused disappointment among members and the people,” he said.
Mohd Shukri admitted that he was still disappointed with individuals who signed statutory declarations (SDs) that led to his removal as Menteri Besar, but said he accepted the matter as part of Allah SWT’s will.
He acknowledged that he still felt hurt towards those involved but stressed that the situation did not mean he wanted to hold grudges or create permanent hostility.
The former Menteri Besar also reminded all parties to prioritise the party’s interests and focus on preparations for the 16th General Election (PRU16), while calling on those who supported efforts to remove him to take responsibility for their actions.
He said he accepted criticism against him but hoped the public and party members would listen to explanations from all sides before making any judgement.
Mohd Shukri also revealed that he had previously faced an allegation of adultery, which he described as slander, but declined to elaborate further on the matter.
