A Yamaha 135LC motorcycle was seized by police after its registration number was found to be registered to a BMW car during a road safety operation on Jalan Tun Razak early today.
The motorcycle was among four seized in an Op Samseng Jalanan carried out jointly by the Kuala Lumpur Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT) and the Road Transport Department (JPJ), which began at about 2am.
The irregularity was uncovered after police stopped two teenagers travelling on the motorcycle, involving an 18-year-old male rider and a 17-year-old girl who was riding pillion.
During questioning, the teenage girl claimed the Yamaha belonged to her father and had only been purchased about four months ago from a motorcycle shop in Tanjung Malim, Perak.
She said she was unaware that the registration number was allegedly fake, claiming the number had been provided by the shop when the motorcycle was purchased.
The teenager, who is from Rawang, also told authorities that she had travelled to Kuala Lumpur to celebrate her boyfriend’s mother’s birthday.
Kuala Lumpur JSPT chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Zamzuri Mohd Isa said the Yamaha 135LC was among four motorcycles seized under Section 108 of the Road Transport Act 1987.
The case highlights the importance of verifying vehicle registration details when purchasing motorcycles, particularly to ensure that the registration number matches the vehicle’s official records.
