A 62-year-old woman suffered burns to about 50 per cent of her body after she was allegedly doused with a liquid believed to be petrol and set on fire at a betting premises in Taman Pusat Kepong today.
Sentul acting district police chief Superintendent Jasni Zolpa said police received a report about the incident at around 8am after the victim, who worked as a counter attendant at the premises, was allegedly attacked by an unidentified man.
The victim was rushed to Kuala Lumpur Hospital (HKL), where she was reported to be in critical but stable condition.
“Initial investigations found that the victim had no known enemies and had never received any threats before the incident. The motive behind the attack is still being investigated,” Jasni said in a statement.
The Kuala Lumpur Police Contingent Headquarters Forensics Unit has also collected several DNA samples and other items from the scene to assist investigations. The case is being investigated under Section 326 of the Penal Code.
Police have since launched a special operation to track down the suspect. Meanwhile, in a separate incident, a man in his mid-20s was injured following a commotion outside the Kuala Lumpur Football Stadium in Cheras last night after the Malaysia-Philippines ASEAN Cup 2026 match.
Cheras district police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Rosdi Daud said investigations were underway to determine the cause of the incident and identify those involved.
He also urged the public not to speculate or circulate unverified information while investigations are ongoing.
In another case, Kajang district police chief Assistant Commissioner Naazron Abdul Yusof said police were looking for witnesses to a fatal accident involving a motorcyclist and a vehicle at KM301.4 of the Kuala Lumpur-Seremban Expressway (PLUS) towards Kuala Lumpur yesterday.
Initial investigations found that the 35-year-old motorcyclist, who was travelling in the left lane, is believed to have lost control and fallen into the middle lane before being hit by a vehicle that was unable to avoid him.
The fatal accident is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
