He was accused of committing the offence at around 5pm on August 3 at a house along Jalan Pantai Sembulan Baru near here.

Liau was charged under Section 12(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, read together with Section 39A(2) of the same Act.

If convicted, the offence carries a jail sentence of between five years and life imprisonment, as well as at least 10 strokes of the cane.

The court fixed September 21 for mention of the case. No bail was offered pending a chemist’s report, as the charge is a non-bailable offence.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Fazriel Fardiansyah Abdul Kadir appeared for the prosecution, while Liau was represented by lawyer Azhier Farhan Arisin.

In a separate case, eight undocumented immigrants were sentenced for entering Sabah without valid immigration documents.

Seven of them were each sentenced to four months in prison, while another was fined RM4,000 or four months’ imprisonment in default of payment.

The eight individuals were detained during enforcement operations in the city after failing to produce valid identification or travel documents when inspected by Immigration Department officers.

After completing their prison terms or paying the fine, they were ordered to be handed over to the Immigration Department for deportation.
