An Air India pilot is reportedly under investigation after allegedly testing positive for cannabis and being found to have taken sleeping medication following a flight that suddenly plunged around 300 feet, leaving at least 20 passengers injured.
The incident occurred on an Airbus A320 travelling from Thailand to Delhi on August 4, around 90 minutes after take-off. Passengers were reportedly thrown towards the aircraft’s ceiling during the sudden drop, while footage later showed damage and cracks inside the cabin.
According to a report cited by NDTV, the captain allegedly tested positive for marijuana in a confirmatory drug test after initially failing two separate tests.
Investigators reportedly began examining the pilot’s condition after cabin crew raised concerns that he appeared unable to control himself during the flight. Sources claimed the captain was found sitting on the cockpit floor when warning alerts sounded as the aircraft began losing altitude.
After the plane landed in Delhi, the pilot was allegedly unsteady on his feet and needed assistance to sit down. He was also reportedly physically assisted by an investigating officer while providing a urine sample.
One passenger also alleged that the pilot appeared to be under the influence even before the aircraft took off, while a crew member is said to have filed a complaint over his alleged marijuana use.
The pilot reportedly told investigators that he had been experiencing sleep difficulties due to personal circumstances and had been prescribed medication by his family doctor. He said he had attempted to rest during the layover but struggled to sleep.
India’s Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) is conducting an independent investigation into the incident, examining flight data, aircraft systems, maintenance and operational records, medical information and witness accounts.
Passengers reportedly experienced severe shaking for around two to three minutes, with some saying the aircraft appeared to tilt during the incident. Air India previously described the event as a brief episode of turbulence while the aircraft was cruising.
The airline said passenger and crew safety remained its top priority and confirmed that it would fully cooperate with authorities investigating the incident.
