A 33-year-old Singaporean man who allegedly fled to Malaysia to evade authorities found himself caught in an unexpected nightmare after he and his girlfriend were reportedly kidnapped in Johor.
Malaysian police rescued the man and his 28-year-old girlfriend in Johor Bahru on Monday (August 11) and arrested six people believed to be linked to the kidnapping.
According to reports by Singaporean and Malaysian media, the man had allegedly entered Malaysia illegally in May and had been hiding there for around three months. He was reportedly wanted by Singaporean authorities after allegedly breaching bail conditions in connection with a drug-related case.
However, his attempt to remain under the radar reportedly took a dramatic turn when he and his girlfriend were abducted and held at an undisclosed location for several days.
Police investigations reportedly found that one of the suspects arrested had previously helped the man enter Malaysia illegally. The individual was allegedly acting as a facilitator, or “snakehead”, before the relationship between the pair turned sour.
The situation escalated on August 10 when the man’s mother allegedly received a ransom demand for S$80,000 (around RM264,000). To prove that the hostages were still being held, the kidnappers allegedly injured the man’s legs and sent photographs to his mother.
Police then launched an operation to track down the suspects. On the afternoon of August 11, officers reportedly identified a supermarket in Johor Bahru where a man in his 40s was allegedly due to collect the ransom.
Police moved in and arrested him before carrying out further raids at several locations in Johor Bahru, where another five suspects were detained.
The two hostages were rescued during the operation, while police also seized several items including mobile phones, cash, watches and jewellery.
Ironically, the Singaporean man did not immediately regain his freedom after being rescued. Instead, he was detained by Malaysian authorities for allegedly entering the country illegally.
The six suspects are being investigated under Malaysian law, while police continue to establish the circumstances surrounding the alleged kidnapping.
What began as an attempt to escape a police manhunt across the border ultimately ended with the fugitive becoming a kidnapping victim — before being detained by authorities for the very act of illegally entering Malaysia.
