The Perak police have disposed of drugs and ketum worth RM4.08 million involving 5,000 investigation papers from cases recorded between 2000 and 2025.
Perak police chief Datuk Mohd Alwi Zainal Abidin said the exhibits were seized during raids and operations across the state’s 16 police districts, with all the cases having completed the relevant court proceedings.
Among the drugs disposed of were 8,144.22 grammes and 524 millilitres (ml) of heroin, 2,797.31 grammes of cannabis, 39,288.47 grammes and 20.95ml of methamphetamine, as well as 120.55 grammes of ketamine.
Other items included ecstasy, yaba, Eramin 5, caffeine, cough medicine, 282,700 grammes of ketum leaves and 2,339,648ml of ketum liquid. Mohd Alwi said the disposal was carried out during the 2026 Perak Narcotics Crime Investigation Department (JSJN) Drug and Ketum Exhibits Disposal Ceremony at the Perak Police Contingent Headquarters on Thursday.
He said 12,916 people had been arrested in Perak for various drug-related offences between January and Aug 10 this year. Of the total, 1,934 were detained for drug trafficking offences, an eight per cent increase from the 1,795 arrests recorded during the corresponding period last year.
A total of 299 people were arrested under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, while another 68 were detained under the Special Preventive Measures Act 1985. For drug possession offences, 4,482 people were arrested compared with 4,509 during the same period last year, while positive urine test cases fell to 6,432 from 6,697.
Mohd Alwi said the decline in arrests for drug possession and positive urine tests was viewed as a positive indication of the police’s intelligence-led approach and operations targeting drug supply networks.
He said enforcement efforts were increasingly focused on cutting off the supply of drugs before they reached the market, including dismantling syndicates and targeting their masterminds and organisers rather than concentrating solely on users.
Meanwhile, drug seizures involving trafficking and possession cases during the same period were valued at RM46.33 million, with methamphetamine, ecstasy, heroin and cannabis among the substances seized in the largest quantities in the state.
Mohd Alwi added that 4,529 investigation papers had been opened under the Dangerous Drugs Act and Poisons Act, with 4,327 cases resulting in charges, representing a 96 per cent prosecution rate.
Enforcement under the Forfeiture of Property Act 1988 against drug traffickers also resulted in the seizure of various assets worth RM4.36 million, including houses, land, jewellery, vehicles and bank accounts.
