Sabah & Sarawak Schools Hit By Floods: 53 Institutions Affected, Relief Centres Opened

Date:

The Education Ministry (KPM) is carrying out continuous monitoring of the flood situation to ensure preparedness, safety and well-being of students, teachers and all education personnel, especially in the affected areas of Sabah and Sarawak.

In a statement today, KPM said the Sabah and Sarawak Education Departments are channeling emergency assistance to all educational institutions impacted by the disaster.

As of 8 a.m. this morning, 53 educational institutions in both states have been affected by floods — 24 primary schools and five secondary schools in Sabah, and 22 primary schools and two secondary schools in Sarawak.

“Six temporary relief centres are operating within KPM educational premises — five in Sabah and one in Sarawak,” the statement added.

KPM also extended its condolences to the families of four students who lost their lives in floods and landslides in several areas of Sabah.

“May all the families be granted strength and resilience in facing this ordeal,” it said.

On Monday, nine people were killed in landslide incidents in Kota Kinabalu and Papar following continuous heavy rain since Sunday night.
