Zara Qairina Inquest: Coroner To Hear Testimony From 35 Children Starting Friday

Date:

The Coroner’s Court is expected to begin calling child witnesses this Friday in the inquest into the death of Zara Qairina Mahathir.

Coroner Amir Shah Amir Hassan said that out of 35 children scheduled to testify during the proceedings, only those directly involved in the inquest would be allowed inside the courtroom.

“We will start with the children and complete all of their testimonies first. During the proceedings, a locus in quo (site inspection) will also be held, with the date to be announced later,” he said at the Coroner’s Court after meeting coordinating officers and lawyers in chambers.

Today marked the eighth day of the inquest, hearing evidence from the seventh witness, Dr. Logaraj Ratha from the Forensic Medicine Department, and the eighth witness, SMKA Tun Datu Mustapha’s chief warden, Azhari Abd Sagap.

The inquest, which began on September 3, is expected to call at least 68 witnesses to examine the facts surrounding Zara’s death.

On July 16, the 13-year-old student was found unconscious at her school dormitory and was pronounced dead the following day, July 17, at Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH).
