An elderly couple escaped a potentially serious ordeal after the car they were travelling in allegedly lost control and crashed into a drain along Jalan Pokok Tampang, Tasek Gelugor, this morning.
The 85-year-old driver, Hassan Abdul Halim, was reported to be safe, while his 78-year-old wife, Zaleha Bakar, was found in a weak condition following the incident.
Penang Fire and Rescue Department assistant director of operations John Sagun Francis said the department received an emergency call about the incident at around 9.15am.
A rescue team from the Tasek Gelugor Fire and Rescue Station was subsequently deployed to the scene to assist the couple.
“Both victims were successfully removed from the Perodua Kelisa and given initial treatment before being taken to Kepala Batas Hospital,” he said.
The rescue operation allowed the elderly couple to receive medical attention without further delay.
The circumstances surrounding the accident, including what caused the vehicle to lose control, remain unclear and are expected to be determined through further investigation.
