Teacher Remanded Six Days Over Alleged Sexual Offence Against Student

Date:

A male teacher has been arrested in Kuala Terengganu after he was allegedly involved in a sexual assault involving a Form Four male student at a secondary school in the district.

Kuala Terengganu district police chief Assistant Commissioner Azli Mohd Noor said the arrest followed a police report lodged by the student at about 4.04pm on Aug 12.

He said the alleged incident took place at around 10.15am on Aug 10 at a secondary school in Kuala Terengganu.

“The suspect, who was known to the complainant and was also his teacher, allegedly committed a physical sexual offence against the student.

“The victim also stated that the suspect had allegedly carried out similar acts several times previously,” he said when contacted on Sunday.

Following the report, police arrested the local male suspect at about 11.10am last Thursday to assist with investigations.

Azli said police subsequently applied for a remand order at the Kuala Terengganu Magistrates’ Court, with the court approving six days of remand from Aug 14 to Aug 19.

A police investigation paper has been opened under Section 14(a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017.

Azli said if convicted, the suspect could face up to 20 years in prison and whipping under the provision.

Police are currently completing the investigation papers before submitting them to the deputy public prosecutor for further instructions.

Azli also urged parents to educate their children from an early age about sexual harassment and to remain attentive to their children’s daily activities.

Members of the public with information that could assist the investigation have been urged to contact the Kuala Terengganu district police.
