Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA) has immediately suspended a staff member accused of sexually harassing at least eight students at one of its educational institutions.
MARA chairman Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said the suspension was necessary to allow a full investigation to be carried out without interference from those involved.
He said the allegations came to light after several students contacted him directly and claimed they had been victims of the alleged misconduct. He subsequently instructed MARA management to take immediate action.
Asyraf said he had encouraged the students to lodge police reports, stressing that the allegations involved a potential criminal offence. He also expressed concern that the students appeared more comfortable approaching him directly than reporting the matter through the institution’s management.
MARA, he said, would not compromise on any form of sexual misconduct and would not allow cases to be concealed or ignored simply to protect the reputation of an institution.
He urged students to come forward and report any misconduct, particularly allegations involving sexual harassment, so appropriate action could be taken.
Asyraf stressed that disciplinary measures could include dismissal for those found responsible, subject to the outcome of the investigation and due process.
The development underscores the importance of providing students with safe and accessible channels to report misconduct, particularly in educational institutions where they may be reluctant to raise sensitive complaints.
MARA said the investigation would be conducted thoroughly, while the allegations remain subject to investigation and have not been proven in court.
The agency’s firm stance is also intended to reassure students that complaints involving alleged sexual misconduct will be taken seriously and handled through the appropriate channels.
