Prisoner Set For Release Months From Now Gets 12 More Years For Robbing Four Women

Date:

A 42-year-old prisoner who was due for release within a few months will remain behind bars after the Sessions Court sentenced him to 12 years in prison and four strokes of the cane for robbing four women, including two elderly victims.

Judge Osman Affendi Mohd Shalleh handed Zamri Yusof a three-year jail term and one stroke for each of the four charges, with all sentences ordered to run consecutively.

Zamri, a father of four, is already serving separate prison terms of 24 months and 10 months imposed by the Muar Sessions Court and Magistrates’ Court on December 9 last year for similar offences and obstructing a public servant.

The first two charges involved the alleged theft of gold bracelets from two women aged 66 and 75. The incidents took place at Simpang Y, Jalan Besar, and Jalan Sri Pasir, Parit Bangas, Sri Medan, between 11am and 12.28pm on June 6 and August 29 last year.

For the third and fourth charges, Zamri was accused of snatching gold necklaces from two other women at Jalan Aman, Yong Peng, and Jalan Pekan Rengit, Rengit, at 9.30am and 6pm on July 17, 2024 and February 24 last year respectively.

All four charges were filed under Section 392 of the Penal Code, which provides for up to 14 years in prison and whipping upon conviction.

According to the case facts, Zamri allegedly rode a motorcycle towards the victims, who were also travelling on motorcycles, before snatching their bracelets and necklaces.

Police subsequently arrested him in Muar at about 5.15pm on November 6 last year. Investigations found that the stolen jewellery had allegedly been sold at goldsmith shops in Kluang, with police recovering several sales receipts as evidence.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Firdaus Ruslan prosecuted the case, while Zamri was represented by lawyer Tan Song Yan from the National Legal Aid Foundation.
