A man in Singapore was fined S$5,000 after using an old electronic door password to enter his former girlfriend’s home, where he found another man and assaulted him.
The 36-year-old pleaded guilty on August 17 to one charge of causing hurt. Two other charges involving trespassing with the intention of causing annoyance were taken into consideration during sentencing.
He was ordered to pay S$5,000 or serve 25 days in jail if he failed to pay. He has since settled the fine.
The incident took place on the night of February 19, 2023, after the man’s former girlfriend told him that she intended to end their relationship.
According to court documents reported by Mothership, he entered her home by keying in the password to the electronic door lock, which he had learned while they were still dating.
He had gone to the unit to collect his PlayStation console.
However, upon entering, he found his former girlfriend with a male friend who had been invited over to play video games.
The man questioned his former girlfriend about the visitor, but she explained that he was only a friend.
Apparently dissatisfied with the explanation, he continued questioning her about their relationship before leaving the unit.
He returned shortly afterwards and began confronting the male friend directly, asking about his relationship with his former girlfriend.
When the man did not respond, the accused became increasingly agitated and a physical altercation broke out.
He repeatedly punched the victim in the head, face and ribs, at one point pinning him against a sofa and throwing three punches towards his head.
The victim raised his arms to protect himself during the assault.
The accused also picked up a plastic bar stool and threw it at the victim before leaving the home.
He later returned once more to question the man about his relationship with his former girlfriend before eventually leaving for good.
The former girlfriend subsequently contacted her mother for help, while her mother called the police to report the disturbance.
The victim was taken to hospital, where he was found to have suffered a fractured left thumb that required immobilisation with a splint.
He also sustained bruising to his forehead, left elbow and left shoulder blade, as well as a superficial cut on one of his fingers.
Court documents revealed that the man had also been involved in another fight at a club in September 2022, where he had punched, kicked and pushed a woman and two other people.
