Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has purchased a historic 19th-century Gothic-style castle overlooking a river in southeast Ireland, around 200 kilometres from the company’s European headquarters.
Strancally Castle, located overlooking the River Blackwater, was built around 1830 and underwent extensive renovations in 2003, according to Ireland’s state architectural archive.
The value of the transaction has not been officially disclosed, as the purchase does not appear on Ireland’s state property price register. However, The Irish Times, which first reported the deal, estimated the property could be worth between €20 million and €30 million.
A spokesman for Zuckerberg confirmed the purchase, saying he and his family were “excited to continue caring for this historic home” and looked forward to spending time in Ireland.
The castle’s purchase adds another high-profile property to Zuckerberg’s portfolio as he maintains ties with Ireland, where Meta has a significant presence.
Meta employs around 1,500 people in Ireland, which is home to the European headquarters of several major US technology companies, partly due to the country’s favourable tax environment.
The historic property is expected to provide Zuckerberg and his family with a private base while allowing them to spend more time in the country known for its castles, countryside and heritage architecture.
