Pulau Redang’s Coral Reefs Under Growing Threat From Overtourism

Date:

The underwater beauty of Pulau Redang is reportedly facing growing pressure, with its coral reef ecosystem said to have deteriorated over the years due to several factors, including the rising number of tourists.

In a video shared on TikTok by user @N.muif, data collected after the Covid-19 pandemic in 2021 reportedly showed a continued decline in the condition of coral reefs around the popular island destination.

The user said one of the main factors behind the deterioration was overtourism, with large numbers of visitors concentrated at the same snorkelling locations. The heavy activity places additional stress on coral reef ecosystems, which are particularly vulnerable in crowded areas.

Another concern is the lack of sufficient mooring buoys for boats. With limited designated mooring points, some boat operators are forced to drop anchors directly onto the seabed, potentially damaging coral reefs, including areas undergoing restoration.

The user also highlighted a lack of awareness among some tourists and day-trip operators about marine conservation. Some visitors were reportedly seen stepping on coral reefs or collecting marine life such as sea cucumbers, without realising that such actions can harm the ecosystem and may be prohibited.

At the same time, the growing number of tourists has contributed to an increase in solid waste on the island, adding further pressure to Pulau Redang’s environment.

Despite the challenges, the user stressed that Pulau Redang can still be protected if conservation efforts begin immediately and are carried out collectively.

Protecting the island’s coral reefs will require greater awareness among visitors, responsible tourism practices and stronger efforts to manage activities around sensitive marine areas.
