A 47-year-old woman was killed after a car crashed into a food court at Bandar Mahkota Cheras early today.
Kajang district police chief Assistant Commissioner Naazron Abdul Yusof said the incident occurred at around 1.15pm.
Preliminary investigations found that the 35-year-old Malaysian driver was believed to have accidentally stepped on the accelerator, causing the vehicle to crash into the food court’s dining area.
The driver then turned the vehicle towards the exit. The victim, who was also a Malaysian, is believed to have run towards the car in an attempt to stop it.
However, the vehicle subsequently struck an iron pole, causing the structure to topple and hit the woman on the head. She suffered severe head injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver was also injured in the incident and was detained before being taken to hospital for treatment and to have samples taken. He remains warded, while police checks found that he had no previous criminal record.
Police are investigating the case under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless or dangerous driving causing death.
Those convicted under the provision may face between five and 10 years in prison, a fine of up to RM50,000 and disqualification from holding a driving licence for at least five years.
Members of the public with information about the incident are urged to contact the nearest police station or traffic investigating officer Inspector Mohd Raziman Rasid at 019-4565502.
