22-Year-Old Man Posed as 14-Year-Old to Catfish And Blackmail 39 Young Girls

Date:

A 22-year-old man, Stuart Latham, has been sentenced to 14 years in prison for a chilling campaign of online child sexual abuse. Posing as a 14-year-old boy named “Josh” on Snapchat, Latham catfished and manipulated hundreds of young girls, culminating in the abuse of 39 victims across the UK.

Preston Crown Court heard how Latham, who was unemployed and living with his parents, treated his horrific activities “like a full-time job.” He spent his days online, preying on girls aged 12 to 15. The court was told he would sometimes offer £200 for “nude” photos or blackmail his victims into sending indecent images and videos by threatening to expose them online.

Detective Sergeant Simon France of Greater Manchester Police’s online child abuse investigation team called Latham “one of the most dangerous sexual child predators” he had ever encountered. The defendant amassed around 4,000 indecent images, many of which he obtained through blackmail.

Latham pleaded guilty to a wide range of offenses, including rape, blackmail, and multiple counts of sexual communications with a child. The abuse occurred between 2023 and 2024.

Courage in the Courtroom

Latham’s arrest in December 2023 came after his first victim, a 12-year-old girl who believed she was in a relationship with a 15-year-old, reported him to the authorities. One of her friends was also later abused by Latham.

Two of his victims were present in the courtroom to witness the sentencing. After Latham was removed from the dock, Judge Philip Parry directly addressed the two tearful girls, who were holding hands.

“You are incredibly brave,” Judge Parry said. “I don’t know many adults who would be brave enough to do what you did. No child or adult should blame themselves. You should all be proud of yourselves as you move forward. You have all beaten him. He has not won.”
