Malaysia’s progress should not be judged by economic growth and technological achievements alone, but also by how well the younger generation is equipped with knowledge, discipline and strong values, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said.
He stressed that education must go beyond academic achievement by nurturing a sense of service, responsibility and love for family, society and the country.
“What is the meaning of development, what is the meaning of a country’s success if our children are not instilled with spirit, education, discipline and love? That is why our children must have such a spirit,” he said.
Anwar said knowledge gained through schools, higher learning institutions and universities should ultimately help shape individuals who are knowledgeable, morally upright and willing to contribute to society, their parents and the nation.
“This is a culture that must be nurtured,” he said when officiating the 15th Malaysian Scouts Jamboree (MYJAM15) at the Penang State Stadium today.
Also present were Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow and Chief Scout Datuk Prof Dr Mohd Zin Bidin.
Touching on the rapid development of information technology and artificial intelligence (AI), Anwar reminded young Malaysians that embracing new technology should not come at the expense of their cultural roots and values.
He said the younger generation must be capable of adapting to technological changes and emerging challenges while preserving the heritage and principles that form the foundation of society.
The Prime Minister also highlighted the importance of strengthening unity within Malaysia’s diverse society, particularly as today’s youth will eventually take on leadership roles.
With the country preparing to celebrate National Day in 2026, Anwar urged young Malaysians to maintain their patriotic spirit and develop the resilience needed to face future challenges.
MYJAM15, held from today until Sept 4, has attracted more than 5,450 local and international scouts from 11 countries, including South Korea, Indonesia, Singapore and Sri Lanka.
The jamboree is also significant for Penang as it marks the return of the national scouting event to the state after six decades. Penang last hosted the jamboree in Teluk Bahang in 1966.
