The Sarawak Government has deployed 119 water tankers across the state as it strengthens contingency measures to deal with a prolonged dry spell expected to persist into 2027 due to El Niño conditions.
The State Ministry of Utility and Telecommunication (MUT) said water levels at several raw water sources had begun to decline, with areas under the Sarawak Rural Water Supply Department (JBALB) particularly exposed due to their reliance on smaller rivers.
Despite the situation, major water supply dams including Bengoh, Gerugu, Assyakirin and Sika are currently recording normal water levels, the ministry said in a statement.
MUT said it was working closely with JBALB and Sarawak Water to monitor raw water intakes and strengthen contingency plans to maintain a stable water supply for communities.
“Measures include deploying additional water tankers, maximising water storage facilities and coordinating alternative water supply arrangements where necessary,” it said.
The ministry added that cross-divisional assistance was being coordinated, including additional tanker support from other agencies, to ensure resources could be deployed efficiently to areas most affected by the dry spell.
Centralised water collection centres have also been identified at locations considered vulnerable to water shortages.
So far, nine collection centres have been established in Sri Aman, while another 13 locations have been identified in Betong. JBALB will continue monitoring conditions on the ground and establish additional centres if required.
The state’s overall response is being coordinated with several key agencies, including the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC), National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA), Malaysian Meteorological Department (METMalaysia) and Sarawak Energy.
As part of the mitigation efforts, cloud-seeding operations are tentatively scheduled from September 3 to 5, subject to suitable weather and atmospheric conditions.
The proposed operation is intended to help replenish water sources as Sarawak continues to face extended periods of dry weather.
