Prosecutors Push Back: 28 Reasons to Overturn Syed Saddiq’s Armada Fund Acquittal

Date:

The prosecution has filed 28 grounds of appeal in the Federal Court seeking to overturn the Court of Appeal’s decision to acquit Muar MP Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman of four charges related to the misappropriation of Angkatan Bersatu Anak Muda (Armada) funds.

The appeal petition names Syed Saddiq, 33, as the respondent. Deputy Public Prosecutor Wan Shaharuddin Wan Ladin confirmed to Sinar Harian that the Federal Court should reinstate the convictions and sentences previously imposed by the Kuala Lumpur High Court, setting aside the Court of Appeal’s June 25 ruling by a three-judge panel.

According to the notice filed, the prosecution argued that the funds collected were specifically for the party’s campaign purposes and should not have been deposited into Syed Saddiq’s personal account, and therefore could not be treated as his absolute right.

On June 25, the Court of Appeal acquitted Syed Saddiq of all four charges dating back seven years: one charge of abetting criminal breach of trust involving RM1 million, one charge of misusing RM120,000 in property, and two counts of money laundering involving RM50,000 each.
