Anthony Loke Cracks Down On KLIA Taxi Scam Following Viral RM800 Fare Case

Date:

The Transport Ministry has warned it will not tolerate “taxi tout” activities at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Terminals 1 and 2, saying such scams damage Malaysia’s reputation.

Transport Minister Anthony Loke said the Road Transport Department (JPJ) arrested a suspected tout following a viral social media post about a foreign tourist who was allegedly overcharged at KLIA2.

“After a post went viral about a foreign tourist being cheated at KLIA T2 — offered RM60 but later forced to pay RM800 before being allowed out of the car — I instructed JPJ to track the vehicle,” Loke wrote on Facebook.

“Yesterday, after an undercover operation at KLIA, JPJ managed to detain the car and its driver. The vehicle was immediately seized and an investigation paper opened for further action.”

Loke shared photos of the seized vehicle and thanked JPJ for its swift response.

The viral incident on September 15 showed a tourist claiming he was quoted RM60 by a local man while looking for a bus to a hotel in Kuala Lumpur. Upon arrival at the hotel, however, the driver allegedly refused to stop, drove to a secluded area and demanded RM836 — about 14 times the agreed fare.
