Consumers are entitled to pay the lower price when the price displayed on a store shelf differs from the amount charged at the checkout, Deputy Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister Datuk Dr Fuziah Salleh said.
She said the right was provided for under the Price Marking Guidelines, which state that when two different prices are displayed for the same product, consumers should be charged the lower amount.
Fuziah urged consumers not to dismiss such discrepancies, even when the difference appears small.
“Some may think, ‘It’s fine, it’s only a RM2 difference.’ But if the same thing happens to many consumers every day, this is no longer just about RM2,” she said in a Facebook post today.
She said consumers should make it a habit to check displayed prices before paying, as they have the right to know the actual price of the products they are purchasing.
If the price at the checkout does not match the price displayed on the shelf, consumers are advised to take a photograph of the price tag, keep their receipt and seek an explanation from the premises.
“Under the Price Marking Guidelines, if there are two different prices for the same product, our right as consumers is to get the lower price. More importantly, our rights as consumers are only truly effective if we know how to exercise them,” she said.
