An 18-year-old man in western Japan’s Hiroshima Prefecture was arrested on Saturday on suspicion of killing a two-month-old baby by covering the infant’s head with a plastic bag, police said.
The suspect, who is believed to be the baby’s father, told authorities that he had not intended to kill the infant.
Police said the suspect allegedly covered the baby’s head with a plastic bag and placed him face down at their home in Fukuyama on Friday.
“The baby was crying loudly, and the suspect thought the action would make him stop crying,” authorities said.
The infant later died from respiratory failure.
The baby’s mother called emergency services the same day to report that her child had died.
Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the infant’s death.
