Worker Dies After Falling From Scaffolding While Heading For Lunch In Penang

Date:

A worker died after falling about seven metres while dismantling scaffolding at a construction site in Bayan Lepas, Penang, last Friday (Sept 4).

The Penang Occupational Safety and Health Department said initial investigations found that the incident occurred at about 1.30pm when the worker was descending the scaffolding to take a lunch break.

“While descending the scaffolding, the victim fell from a height of about seven metres onto the floor,” the department said in a statement on Sunday (Sept 6).

The worker suffered serious head injuries in the fall and was taken to Penang Hospital for treatment, but was later pronounced dead.

Following the incident, the department issued a stop-work order and a prohibition of interference order to preserve the scene and facilitate the investigation.

Further investigations are underway, including recording statements from the employer and witnesses, to determine the cause of the accident and assess compliance with occupational safety and health laws.

The investigation is being conducted under Sections 15, 18A and 18B of the Occupational Safety and Health Act 1994 (Act 514), along with the relevant occupational safety and health regulations.
