‘He Can Spend On Friends, But Not Me’: M’sian Woman Questions Boyfriend’s 50-50 Approach

Date:

A Malaysian woman has sparked an online debate after revealing that constantly splitting expenses with her boyfriend while saving for marriage has left her emotionally drained.

In an anonymous post, she said she and her boyfriend, both fresh graduates, had been saving for their future wedding for about two years, with each aiming to set aside RM30,000.

However, she admitted that the pressure of saving while paying for almost everything equally had gradually taken a toll on her.

The woman said she earns around RM3,000 from her office job, while also running an online business at night and working part-time as a cashier on weekends.

Her boyfriend works as an operator during the day and earns extra income as an e-hailing driver at night.

She stressed that he was not stingy and that both were simply trying to establish themselves financially. Still, she said she sometimes felt envious when she saw other women receiving flowers, gifts or meals from their partners.

In her relationship, she said most expenses were split 50-50, including small purchases when they went out. Even when she wanted snacks or makeup, she would usually pay for them herself.

She also said there were occasions when she paid for both their meals because she earned more and felt responsible for doing so.

What particularly frustrated her was seeing her boyfriend spend money when he went out with friends.

She claimed he could spend more than RM30 a day eating out or socialising with them, while she rarely went out because she was focused on building their wedding savings.

The tension eventually boiled over during a recent date when she was craving jacket potatoes and asked him to take her to a shop selling them.

She ordered two portions costing RM23 in total, but when her boyfriend did not offer to pay, she covered the bill herself.

Although RM23 was not a significant amount, she said it became the tipping point after months of keeping her frustrations to herself.

She eventually confronted him, telling him she was tired of never feeling treated by her partner.

Her boyfriend apologised and offered to transfer the RM23 to her, but she declined.

During their subsequent conversation, he reportedly told her that he could not afford to spend on her like other men because he was trying to save for their wedding.

That explanation only added to her frustration.

She said she had saved more than RM12,000 after two years, while her boyfriend had accumulated slightly over RM7,000.

This led her to question why he could still spend money with his friends but rarely treated her.

The post prompted mixed reactions online, with some questioning whether splitting every expense equally was sustainable in the long term.

Others suggested that the couple could simply be at different stages of financial readiness and maturity.

Some commenters also cautioned her against relying too heavily on online opinions, saying conflicting advice could make her even more confused. Instead, they encouraged her to take time to reflect on what she wants and carefully consider the relationship before deciding whether to proceed with marriage.
