A 46-year-old trader has been sentenced to 30 years in prison and 24 strokes of the cane after being found guilty of trafficking more than 77kg of methamphetamine five years ago.
High Court judge Datuk Abdul Wahab Mohamed handed down the sentence today after ruling that the defence had failed to raise reasonable doubt at the end of the defence case.
For the first charge, Liew Wan Wah was sentenced to 30 years in prison and 12 strokes of the cane. He received the same sentence for the second charge.
The court ordered both prison terms to run concurrently from the date of his arrest, while the 24 strokes of the cane remain in effect.
Liew was found guilty of trafficking 74,477.8g (74.48kg) of methamphetamine at the Gopeng Toll Plaza entrance to the highway, before the toll payment booths, in Kampar at about 7.30pm on June 23, 2021.
He faced a second charge involving 3,267g (3.27kg) of the same drug at a parking area beneath the Criminal Investigation Narcotics Division office at the Kampar district police headquarters at about 2am the following day.
Both charges were brought under Section 39B(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, punishable under Section 39B(2) of the same Act and read together with Section 34 of the Penal Code.
A conviction under the provision carries the death penalty or life imprisonment, with at least 12 strokes of the cane if the death penalty is not imposed.
Deputy public prosecutor Yasinnisa Begam Seeni Mohideen led the prosecution, while Liew was represented by lawyer P Ravee.
