A foul smell coming from a house in Taman Seri Bistari, Nibong Tebal, led police to the body of a man found with his hands and feet bound inside a sewage tank.
Police went to the house after receiving a complaint from a neighbour about the strong odour.
The victim, believed to be in his 50s, is believed to have been inside the tank for at least two days.
Penang police chief Datuk Dennis Lim confirmed the discovery, Berita Harian reported.
Police later found that a missing person’s report had recently been lodged involving the victim. The victim’s nephew also filed a police report yesterday after noticing several suspicious transactions involving the deceased’s bank account.
Among the transactions was a transfer of about RM30,000 to a grocery store in Sungai Bakap on Monday.
Police checks found that the grocery store owner was subsequently instructed to transfer the money to a bank account in Myanmar.
Seberang Perai Selatan police chief Norazmi Abd Ghapar said the case was being investigated as murder under Section 302 of the Penal Code.
He said police were still working to formally identify the deceased, while an autopsy would be conducted to determine the cause of death.
“We urge the public to refrain from speculating on the case until investigations are completed,” he said in a statement.
Police are investigating both the death and the suspicious financial transactions.
