Elderly Woman Brutally Mauled by Bear During Morning Walk

Date:

Japan has seen a spate of bear attacks recently, and early this morning (Sept 23) an 80-year-old woman in Akita Prefecture was mauled while out for a walk, leaving her with a broken nose and facial injuries. Police have urged residents in the area to be on high alert.

According to Yomiuri Shimbun, the attack occurred at about 5.30am in Kawaguchi, Odate City. The elderly resident was walking along a street when a bear, roughly 50cm long, suddenly burst out of roadside shrubs and attacked her.

The animal fled soon after, and the injured woman managed to return home on her own before her family called the police.

Because the street is also a route used by elementary school pupils, local authorities are warning nearby residents to exercise caution and remain vigilant.
