A 40-year-old man was found dead in a drain in front of a grocery shop at Batu 1½, Jalan Tambun Tulang, Simpang Empat on Thursday.
Kangar district police chief Assistant Commissioner Yusharifuddin Mohd Yusop said police received information about the discovery at 10.45am from a man who had noticed a foul smell before checking the small drain in front of his house.
He said police found the victim lying face down in the drain when they arrived at the scene. He was wearing a long-sleeved shirt and long trousers.
“Preliminary checks at the scene found no indication of criminal elements involving the man,” Yusharifuddin said in a statement today.
Further checks found that the man had been reported missing by his mother at the Kangar police station at about 5.16am on Wednesday.
Police also found that the man had schizophrenia and was receiving treatment at the Psychiatry Unit of Tuanku Fauziah Hospital.
The single man, who lived with his family, was reported to have left home on Sept 8 and failed to return, prompting his mother to lodge a missing person’s report.
Yusharifuddin said investigations were ongoing and the case was currently classified as a sudden death (SDR).
