A 10-tonne lorry carrying export rice overturned on the North-South Expressway after skidding off the road at Km217.9 southbound on Friday night, scattering its cargo across the highway.
The incident, which occurred at about 11pm, also left the 41-year-old driver and 26-year-old attendant injured. Both were taken to hospital for treatment.
Melaka Fire and Rescue Department Zone 2 chief Tc Zulkhairani Ramli said the department received an emergency call at 11.04pm before a team was dispatched to the scene.
“Upon arrival, the operation team confirmed a road accident involving an Isuzu 10-tonne lorry that had skidded off the road.
“The lorry was carrying export rice from Selangor to Johor, and the incident was believed to have occurred after one of its tyres burst,” he told reporters today.
The operation was led by Senior Fire Officer I Hanizah Jaafar, with 11 personnel from the Alor Gajah Fire and Rescue Station, assisted by personnel from the Rembau Fire and Rescue Station.
Zulkhairani said both victims received initial treatment from Health Ministry personnel before being taken to hospital.
The operation ended at 12.22am after firefighters ensured there were no further hazards at the scene.
