Malaysia, Iran Seek To Strengthen Ties Amid Rising West Asia Tensions

Date:

Malaysia is seeking to strengthen its longstanding friendship with Iran while exploring new areas of cooperation between the two countries.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the matter was discussed during his meeting with Iranian President Dr Masoud Pezeshkian in New Delhi today.

Anwar said Malaysia also expressed concern over the prolonged conflicts and escalating tensions in West Asia, urging all parties to avoid actions that could further worsen the situation.

“Malaysia calls on all parties to stop actions that could aggravate the situation, return to the negotiating table and prioritise dialogue and diplomacy to resolve disputes peacefully.

“Malaysia maintains that the freedom and security of maritime routes through the Strait of Hormuz must continue to be preserved in accordance with international law,” he said in a post on X today.

Anwar warned that any disruption to the strategic waterway could have far-reaching consequences for global energy security, trade and the economy.

He said both sides also explored ways to expand Malaysia-Iran trade and investment, particularly in energy, agriculture, palm oil, food security, the halal industry, technology and higher education.

“After the bilateral meeting, Dr Masoud and I also had a one-on-one discussion.

“God willing, Malaysia is ready to translate this friendship into more meaningful and sustained cooperation for the benefit of the people of both countries,” he said.
