‘If They Feel UMNO Is No Longer Needed, Remove Us’, Says Tok Mat

Date:

UMNO will remain in the unity government until the end of its term unless its coalition partners decide they no longer want the party, said deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan.

He said UMNO would honour the agreement reached when the unity government was formed and would not take any action that could create political instability.

“We hold to our promise. But it is up to the parties concerned. If they feel UMNO is no longer needed, then remove us. That is all,” he told reporters after the closing of the 2026 UMNO General Assembly here on Saturday.

Mohamad, better known as Tok Mat, said UMNO president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi’s remarks during his winding-up speech were aimed at critics on social media who had been calling for the party to leave the unity government.

He said such critics might not fully understand the circumstances surrounding the formation of the government or UMNO’s role within it.

“UMNO has a role in the government. That was the purpose of forming the government together with Pakatan Harapan in the first place.

“The basis was for us to administer the country together and ensure stability,” he said.

Earlier, Zahid warned against challenging UMNO to leave the unity government during his winding-up speech at the assembly.

He said any attempt to remove UMNO from the administration should instead be followed by a fresh mandate from voters or a no-confidence vote in the Dewan Rakyat.
