North Korea has carried out a large-scale live-fire exercise involving long-range artillery and various types of missiles, according to state media in Pyongyang.
The Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported that the exercise, described as a “firepower strike exercise”, began on Saturday and involved combined units at all levels of the Korean People’s Army.
The drill came a day after South Korea reported that North Korea had launched several ballistic missiles from the Wonsan area towards the East Sea, also known as the Sea of Japan.
The launches took place just a day after South Korea concluded a five-day maritime exercise with the United States and Japan, which focused on threats posed by North Korea.
KCNA did not disclose where the latest large-scale exercise was conducted.
According to the report, the drill involved several new combat systems, including various types of attack drones, tactical missiles, large-calibre multiple rocket launchers with thermobaric capabilities and tactical ballistic missiles.
KCNA claimed the weapons demonstrated “great destructive power” through coordinated firing after hitting their targets with 100 per cent accuracy.
