Loke Urges PM Anwar To Convene PH Council Meeting Over Zahid’s Recent Remarks

Date:

DAP secretary-general Loke Siew Fook has urged Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to convene a Pakatan Harapan (PH) presidential council meeting following recent remarks by Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

Loke, who is also the transport minister, said the meeting was needed to address concerns over political certainty, amid signs that parties within the unity government appeared to be moving in different directions.

“Some of the statements made are not good in terms of the country’s political certainty. The government’s component parties do not seem to be heading in the same direction.

“This would not give investors and the public much confidence,” he said on the sidelines of an event in Sungai Buloh today.

Zahid had taken several veiled jabs at Anwar during last week’s Umno general assembly, including saying that Umno could potentially govern the country better than the prime minister.

The Barisan Nasional chairman also challenged critics of the coalition to remove Umno and BN from the unity government and table a no-confidence motion against Anwar in the Dewan Rakyat.

Zahid said Umno and BN had agreed to form the unity government with PH on the advice of the King following the 2022 general election, but stressed that such cooperation did not amount to surrendering the party’s political future.

He also maintained that Umno and BN were free to chart their own political course, including in the next general election and the upcoming Melaka state election.

At the same time, Zahid reiterated Umno’s commitment to remain in the current administration until the end of its term.
