Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today expressed his appreciation to Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad for Malaysia’s continued support of Timor-Leste’s path towards ASEAN membership.
In a historic address at the Timor-Leste Parliament, Anwar emphasized that Malaysia has maintained a consistent stance since the early days of Timor-Leste’s struggle for independence.
“Many of you recall the pre- and post-independence period when Dr Mahathir Mohamad was Prime Minister. He consistently voiced support for Timor-Leste. I now see it as my responsibility to ensure this accession process proceeds smoothly,” he said.
Anwar was given the honour of delivering his landmark speech on the second day of his official visit. He arrived at 8:55 a.m. and was welcomed by President of the National Parliament of Timor-Leste, Maria Fernanda Lay, for a brief meeting before speaking at 9 a.m.
The speech was regarded as a special tribute that reflects the growing warmth and confidence in Malaysia–Timor-Leste relations.
The Prime Minister also praised Timor-Leste’s Parliament as the “heartbeat of democracy” and reaffirmed Malaysia’s strong backing for the country’s full ASEAN membership.
Anwar noted that Timor-Leste’s democratic journey serves as an inspiration for the region, showcasing the nation’s determination in overcoming challenges and discrimination to stand tall as an independent state.
