30-Year-Old Man Charged With Killing Wife And Male Victim In Brutal Stabbing Attack

Date:

A private sector employee was brought before the Magistrate’s Court here today on charges of murdering his wife and another man by stabbing them during an incident two weeks ago.

Syed Al Iqbal Syed Shahruddin, 30, was charged before Magistrate Anis Suraya Ahmad with causing the deaths of Ku Mohd Asraf Ku Shaif @ Ku Shuib, 30, and Nurul Nur Syamira Khamis, 28, outside a house in Taman Nona, Guar Chempedak, Yan, between 9pm and 10pm on September 11.

He was charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code, which carries the death penalty or a maximum of 40 years’ imprisonment, and if not sentenced to death, a minimum of 12 strokes of the cane.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Nik Nurhazirah Tuan Yahya appeared for the prosecution, while the accused was represented by lawyers Abdul Hayyi Salim, Diyana Ibrahim, and Shameer Haziq Shaharuddin. No plea was recorded today as murder cases fall under the jurisdiction of the High Court.

Nik Nurhazirah requested the court to fix a new mention date and hand over case documents, adding that no bail offer was made to the accused. Abdul Hayyi, meanwhile, asked that his client be transferred from Alor Setar Prison to Marang Prison to make it easier for family members in Terengganu to visit.

Magistrate Anis Suraya advised the defence to file a formal application to the Prisons Department for the transfer.

The accused was arrested in Kuala Terengganu about 13 hours after the incident, and police reportedly seized a 24-centimetre weapon in a bushy area in Sungai Petani.
