Police have crippled an organised crime syndicate involved in violence, murder and armed robbery with the arrest of 17 members under Op Sparrow.
The group, led by a local man, had allegedly been recruiting teenagers to boost its power and profits and is believed to be behind 80 criminal cases to date.
Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail said the suspects were picked up in a series of raids and arrests across Selangor, Negeri Sembilan, Penang and Perak on 11 September.
The operation was a joint effort between Bukit Aman’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and state-level CID units.
“Seventeen suspects aged between 19 and 44 were arrested. They are part of about 33 members led by a local man active since 2023. The arrests involved two groups believed to be directly linked to the crimes,” Mohd Khalid told a press conference at Bukit Aman.
The gang had drawn public concern earlier this year after a fatal attack at a restaurant in Taman Sentosa, Klang, went viral on social media.
According to Mohd Khalid, the group’s main motives were profit and territorial influence, with some members also suspected of involvement in drug trafficking and illegal money-lending.
Six members remain at large and are being hunted by police. Initial checks revealed the 17 arrested suspects collectively have 80 prior criminal records, including 34 drug-related offences.
All suspects are being held under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 (SOSMA). The case is also being investigated under Section 130V of the Penal Code for membership of an organised crime group and under the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act (AMLA) to trace the syndicate’s funding channels.
“There is zero tolerance for crime groups threatening national security. This success is the result of integrated intelligence and enforcement, sending a clear message that anyone challenging the law will face justice,” Mohd Khalid said.
He urged the public to provide information on remaining members and to steer clear of crime and drugs.
